Winston-Salem
Southern hospitality is just around the corner here. There's always time for a hello, the time of day and a discussion on the weather, and there's no better place than over lunch or dinner at one of our many dining establishments. Consider an evening of fine dining at Noble's Grill, Fabian's or the Zevely House. Also visit the Village Tavern in Reynolda Village or the The Old Filling Station for the best outdoor dining experiences in town.

Something Sweet Please
The Moravian presence in our local bakery products is strong.

Dewey's Bakery, family owned and operated since 1930, still uses Moravian recipes that are more than 200 years old. Priding themselves on doing things the old fashioned way, most of the baking is done by hand. Be sure to try Grandpa and Grandma's Coffee Cakes, as well as their famous hot cross buns and Moravian lovefeast buns.

Winkler Bakery, located in Old Salem, was established in 1800. Here, the famous coffeecake is baked and served hot from the wood-fired oven (ask one of the ladies about the secret ingredient).

Mrs. Hanes' Moravian Cookies are wafer-thin and have been hand-rolled, hand-cut and hand-packed for more than 75 years. Run by Evva Hanes and her family, Mrs. Hanes' Moravian Cookies is the world's largest hand-made cookie company.

Ollie's Bakery, situated between downtown Winston-Salem and Old Salem, is a member of the Bread Baker's Guild. This locally owned and operated bakery sells a wide variety of fine breads, desserts, cakes and morning sweets, as well as gift and breakfast baskets.

Yadkin Valley Wineries
Many local vineyards have selected the rich fertile grounds of the Yadkin River as the site to grow many varieties of grapes. Visit the vineyards for a wine tasting and view the traditional European grape varieties from which the great wines of the world are vinted.

Shelton Vineyards, with more than 200 acres of vineyards, is the largest on the East Coast, growing 13 varieties of vinifera grapes.

Westbend Vineyards is described by the Wine Advocate as the best-kept secret in the Southeast.

RayLen Vineyards' wine list includes chardonnay, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc.

Germanton Art Gallery & Winery showcases it wines and stocks many original works by international artists.

Krispy Kreme
Winston-Salem is home to this doughnut giant, founded in 1936. The store located at 259 South Stratford Road is near corporate headquarters and allows visitors to see the doughnuts being made. Numerous variations of the "original glazed" doughnuts can be purchased. Watch for the flashing "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign.

City Market
The City Market first opened in 1925 and flourished until the late 1950s. It featured high ceilings, 27 skylights and 230 windows, many with handsome awnings. After a period of decline beginning in the 1960s, the building reopened in 1990 following a $2.4 million renovation. It now houses the Downtown School and various offices. An outdoor farmer's market is held seasonally.
