NCMA Winston-Salem: Where Art and Events Collide
From concerts to family fun to House Hangs, here’s a look at regular events at NCMA you don't want to miss.
Blending contemporary creativity with a historic touch, the North Carolina Museum of Art, Winston-Salem (NCMA) is more than just a museum—it’s an experience. Set within the former estate of textile magnate James G. Hanes, this cultural hub brings the world of modern art to life in a sleek, scenic setting.
But it’s not just the art that makes the museum special—it’s the energy and the lively calendar of events that keep things buzzing year-round. Whether it’s outdoor concerts, hands-on family art days, or intimate dinners like House Hangs, there’s always something engaging happening at NCMA (formerly known as SECCA). Below, we’ll share just a sampling of the events to look forward to this summer and beyond.
Concerts & Music at NCMA
NCMA Winston-Salem offers a diverse lineup of concerts throughout the year, ranging from intimate indoor performances to open-air lakeside shows. Thanks to its flexible venue spaces, including the 300-seat Dunn Auditorium and the scenic Lakeside Stage, NCMA provides unique settings that suit any musical experience —whether cozy and close-knit or outdoors and spacious.
Upcoming shows include a Vibraphone Trio (June 8), which blends jazz, funk, and hip-hop into genre-defying grooves. The concert is part of NCMA's Southern Idiom series, celebrating local artistry. Other signature concerts at NCMA include Lakeside Series, held on NCMA's sloping back lawn, and the folk-American infused Crossroads series. Both series are held on varying dates year-round, welcoming both well-known headliners and up-and-coming acts. Stay tuned for details on upcoming shows.
House Hangs
On the last Friday of each month, the historic Hanes House terrace comes alive with House Hangs—a laid-back social gathering where good food, great music, and local connections take center stage.
Set against the scenic terrace backdrop, these evenings feature dinner by local chefs, music from top area DJs, seasonal beverages, and plenty of good vibes. The events are held rain or shine—taking place outdoors on the NCMA patio when weather permits, or inside the cozy Hanes House confines if needed.
Like the Nite School events, House Hangs are pay-what-you-wish: $0, $5, $20, or whatever fits your budget. Just choose your amount when you register. Upcoming House Hangs will be held on May 30 and June 27.
Nite School events
Held on Thursdays in the intimate rooms of the historic Hanes House, Nite School at NCMA is far from your typical adult education. Each session sparks curiosity and fosters idea sharing, reimagining learning as a dynamic, interactive experience. Best of all, the cost is entirely up to you—pay what you wish when you register. Here’s a look at the current Nite School series:
• Book Club: Gather in the cozy Hanes House for lively, guided discussions. From bestselling novels to experimental reads, the club explores themes, imagery, and storytelling. Whether you’ve read the book or just want to listen, all are welcome. The next Book Club is on Thursday, June 12.
- • Vinyl Lounge: Bring your favorite records to share or just come to listen and discuss. Hosted by Ember Audio + Design, Vinyl Lounge invites music lovers to spin vinyl on a high-fidelity system while exploring diverse genres. Upcoming dates include May 29 and June 26.
2nd Saturday: Family Art and Cars & Coffee
Looking for a creative way to spend time with your family? Head to NCMA Winston-Salem on the second Saturday of each month from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. for hands-on artmaking designed for all ages. As one of the museum’s longest-running programs, the 2nd Saturday Family Art Activities encourage families to make lasting memories while exploring their artistic side. Each month’s activities are inspired by current exhibitions, offering something new every time. Pre-registration is recommended.
The second Saturday of the month is also when NCMA hosts Cars & Coffee (8–11 a.m.), a laid-back gathering for car lovers of all kinds featuring a mix of classic, luxury, and unique cars. Each month features a different theme and a highlighted car. June 14 will showcase German luxury brand Porsche, while July 12 celebrates the sleek designs of British sports car maker Austin-Healey.
As a bonus, museum admission is free all day on the second Saturday, giving you a great excuse to stick around and check out NCMA's latest exhibits. (The museum is open from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. on Saturdays.) Check out the NCMA calendar for more details on upcoming themes.
