About
Freedom Day is here! On May 21st, 1865, the Chaplain of the Ohio Calvary announced to the congregation of St. Philips Afro-Moravian Church and the residents of Salem that slavery had been legally abolished and they were now an emancipated and free people.
On Saturday, May 23rd, Old Salem celebrates emancipation and liberation with our Freedom Day Celebration. Join us for guided walking tours, hands-on activities, and special demonstrations throughout the district. Programs will center around the African American experience in Salem, Afro-Moravian identity, and both emancipation and post-emancipation life for the African descended residents of the Wachovia tract. Come partake in the story of Black Joy and learn how the Freedmen's community became the foundation of economic prosperity in Winston Salem today.
Walking tours will be held at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM and will meet at the Salem Tavern. All guided tours and activities are INCLUDED with your standard admission ticket, so get yours today!
