About

On May 21, 1865, the Chaplain of the Ohio Cavalry stood before the congregation of St. Philips Afro-Moravian Church and declared that slavery had been abolished—a moment of profound significance for the African-descended residents of Salem.

Join us for a Freedom Day Celebration, where themed interpretation, hands-on activities, and spot talks will bring this historic occasion to life. Explore the African American experience in Salem, from Afro-Moravian identity to life after emancipation, and discover how the Freedmen’s community shaped Winston-Salem’s economic foundation.

📍 Spot Talks Locations:

  • Log Church Porch
