About

Heartland Baroque, along with guest artist Charles Humphries, Countertenor enthusiastically welcomes you into the vibrant soundscape of the early Baroque, where music was not merely composed but lived. Our new concert project honors the extraordinary journey of Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672)-revered as the most influential 17th-Century German composer and devoted Kapellmeister in the service of both court and church.

Through his expressive psalm settings, we glimpse the life of a musician shaped by faith, discipline, and artistic calling. Schütz’s music, marked by emotional depth and textual clarity, reflects his own journey-from the chapels of Dresden to the vibrant musical circles of Venice. Letters and documents in translation from Heinrich Schütz’s own hand will further illuminate his heart as a composer.

But his story doesn’t end there. This concert also shines a light on some of the students and colleagues who carried his torch: Johann Wilhem Furchheim, Johann Vierdanck, and Carlo Farina-composers who inherited not only Schütz’s techniques but his spirit of devotion and innovation. Their works echo their master’s voice while reaching toward a new musical future.

Join us for a performance of music that celebrates not only a master composer, but a life lived in service of sound, and the enduring ripple of mentorship across generations.
