Mapping Prejudice, Building Understanding: The Legacy of Housing Segregation in Forsyth County

Have you ever wondered why some neighborhoods look and feel different from others? This presentation explores the historical tools and policies that promoted housing segregation in the first half of the 20th century, including racially restrictive covenants, redlining, and racialized zoning. Special emphasis will be placed on the Mapping Prejudice Project in Forsyth County, North Carolina, which uses GIS and archival research to uncover how these practices shaped local neighborhoods. By visualizing the geography of discrimination, the project reveals how past injustices continue to influence patterns of inequality and opportunity today.
