Bookmarks is a literary arts nonprofit and independent bookstore located in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Originally founded in 2004 as an annual book festival, Bookmarks has grown into the largest annual book festival in the Carolinas. What began as a volunteer-led event has evolved into a year-round 501(c)(3) organization that serves as a vibrant community hub for readers, non-readers, and authors alike.


Through a wide range of events, conversations, and activities, Bookmarks connects people of all ages with books and authors that educate, inspire, challenge, and entertain. The organization’s mission is to cultivate community by fostering literacy, curiosity, critical thinking, and action.


All of Bookmarks’ programming—including the renowned Festival of Books & Authors—is designed to encourage meaningful engagement with literature and to support lifelong learning through accessible, inclusive experiences.
