About
Native Vines Winery is recognized as the first American Indian–owned winery in the United States. Founded and operated by Darlene Gabbard, a proud member of the Lumbee Tribe—the largest Native American tribe east of the Mississippi River—the winery reflects a deep connection to heritage, land, and craftsmanship.
Located in Lexington, North Carolina, on 36 acres of rolling pasture and woodland, the winery sits on the historic homeland of the Keyauwee Tribe of Indians. The property is bordered by Highway 150, known as the Old Waxhaw Indian Trading Trail, and Indian Grave Creek, an area steeped in local legend where arrowheads are still occasionally found in the soil.
Native Vines Winery produces a full lineup of award-winning vitis vinifera wines alongside a variety of fruit blends. Under Gabbard’s direction, the winery has also introduced a distinctive and innovative line of Green Tea Wines—an industry first—celebrated for their refreshing and unique character. The winery is dedicated to crafting clean, natural, Old World–style wines that highlight both tradition and creativity.
The tasting room, housed in a renovated horse barn, offers guided tastings where guests may select six wines from the current list. While indoor seating is limited, visitors can enjoy expansive outdoor accommodations, including a patio and picnic areas set within the scenic property. Water and non-alcoholic beverages are available for designated drivers.
Native Vines Winery hosts live music events featuring local food trucks, and guests are welcome to bring their own food when outside vendors are not present. Their wines are distributed throughout North Carolina in grocery stores and wine shops, with shipping available nationwide.
