Founded by brothers Charlie and Ed Shelton, Shelton Vineyards has played a significant role in North Carolina’s wine industry. The brothers were instrumental in establishing the Yadkin Valley as the state's first American Viticultural Area (AVA). Seeking new agricultural opportunities for local farmers transitioning from tobacco and dairy production, they purchased a 400-acre former dairy farm and planted their first vines in 1999. The tasting room opened in 2000, and today Shelton Vineyards remains one of the region’s most celebrated wine destinations.
