Bookmarks has announced "Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal" by Dr. Bettina L. Love as this year's selection for its annual Book with Purpose summer program. The program brings the Winston-Salem community together around one central theme each year, building programming throughout the summer in collaboration with nonprofits, schools, community groups, and local businesses. "Punished for Dreaming" explores the effects of four decades of public school policy on Black children, highlighting how certain education reforms have created challenges for students of color. A New York Times and USA Today bestseller, the book is also a winner of the 2024 Goddard Riverside Stephan Russo Book Prize for Social Justice. The program will begin in June and conclude at the 21st Annual Bookmarks Festival of Books & Authors on September 26, 2026, where Dr. Love will appear for a free, public author event. Bookmarks aims to distribute 5,000 copies throughout Winston-Salem beginning in June; pickup sites and events will be listed at bookmarksnc.org/BookwithPurpose.
