About

Alix Hitchcock has an endless desire to experiment with visual effects from many approaches and mediums. She pursues her art making until she gets unique results that have evolved from surprising layers of meaning and playful experiments. Ultimately, she wants the making of art to be an open-ended mental and visual journey for herself as well as the viewing public.

Dave Urena’s photos in this show are his attempts to capture the wonder of the world as he pushes the tools he uses – the panoramic function on his iPhone camera app and Google’s now-decommissioned photosphere app – to places beyond what is expected.

The camera apps on modern phones generate impressive photos with minimal intervention by the person taking the picture. How much is commanded by the app? What overrides does a photographer have over the resulting picture? Where do the intentions of the photographer and the suggestions of the app begin and end? Where do the thoughts of the artist and the directions from the tool cross paths?

Is there anything that a photographer can do to subvert the algorithms that govern picture-taking and thwart a tool that behaves like it has a mind of its own? Can the app be led to dance to an artist’s bidding?
