About

Exhibition Dates: January 9 – February 28, 2026

Artist’s Reception: Friday, January 9, 5-7 pm

“I am particularly fascinated by flowers. They come in innumerable shapes, sizes and colors and present themselves as beautiful opportunities for visual expression. I treat each flower individually to capture each one's unique characteristics.” – Dean Roland Johnson.

Reminiscent of Georgia O’Keeffe’s large flower paintings, Dean Roland Johnsonenlarges small flowers to enormous proportions---filling the entire canvas, making them impossible to ignore.

Extreme close-up and cropping create an intimate, immersive view, drawing attention to color, shape, and texture rather than botanical accuracy. The use of rich, gradient color transitions and careful blending emphasizes depth and gives the petals a glowing, almost sculptural presence. The paintings convey both strength and delicacy and their monumental scale gives flowers a presence typically reserved for large landscapes or historical scenes.

It’s hard to describe what Dean puts into a painting of a flower. It comes from deep within him, a pure feeling the way he goes through life, honoring beauty.

“Flowers restore something vital in me,” says Dean Roland Johnson

Dean's early years were spent in the Midwest where he graduated with Distinction from Cornell College, IA. He then received a Fellowship at Pratt Institute, NYC, earning an MFA in painting and art history. After Pratt he taught painting, drawing, design and art appreciation. He exhibited his work and received several museum purchase awards in competitions, including the Best in Show award, at the Mid-South Regional competition held by the Brooks Memorial Gallery in Memphis, Tennessee.

After teaching, Dean went on to forecast design and color trends and developed products for four textile mills. Over the years he has owned and restored several historic properties, most recently an 1882 Diamond Collection Victorian inn in Norfolk, CT.

In 2017 Dean and his wife Jean Marie relocated to Winston-Salem, NC, where he is an exhibiting member Associated Artists of Winston-Salem. His work can be found in the collection of Artfolios, an online Gallery of fine arts.
