About

Daniel Llinás opens the evening with La Chancla, a playful and electrifying work inspired by a beloved symbol of Hispanic culture. Blending driving merengue rhythms with colorful modern harmonies, the piece moves effortlessly between folklore and fantasy, creating a musical landscape that is both spirited and imaginative.

The program's centerpiece features acclaimed jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Summer Camargo, one of the most exciting young voices in American music today. Recently named one of DownBeat magazine’s "25 for the Future" rising jazz stars, Camargo has quickly established herself as a dynamic performer, appearing with the Mingus Big Band, Broadway’s Just in Time, and as the youngest member of the Saturday Night Live house band. A Juilliard graduate and award-winning artist, she brings extraordinary artistry, virtuosity, and creativity to the stage.

The concert concludes with Leonard Bernstein’s beloved Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, a brilliant showcase drawn from one of the most celebrated musicals of all time. Adapted for wind ensemble, the suite captures the passion, energy, and tragedy of Bernstein’s masterpiece through its unforgettable dances and melodies. From the explosive excitement of the Mambo to the tender lyricism of the love music and the haunting beauty of the finale, the work remains one of the defining achievements of American musical theater.
