About
Michelle Merrill, conductor of the Winston-Salem Symphony, leads the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra in a program of works highlighted by Edward Elgar’s famed “Enigma Variations.” This beloved work paints vivid musical portraits of the composer’s friends, with the soaring “Nimrod” variation at its heart. The program also features alum Carter Doolittle (B.M. ‘25), winner of the 2025 UNCSA Concerto Competition, performing Henri Tomasi's Concerto for Alto Saxophone — a lush, exuberant work with a hint of jazz — and "Transfigured to Grace,” a new work by Jessie Montgomery, one of today’s most exciting voices in American music.
