Your guide to exploring the full Salem Lake Trail with stops, views, and trail tips
Located just east of the action in downtown Winston-Salem, Salem Lake is a hidden gem oasis for outdoor enthusiasts in the area. Salem Lake offers beautiful views, year-round trail access, a newly updated playground and marina, and seasonal water access with rentable kayaks and john boats.

Trailhead
Park just outside the entrance gate and start your adventure from the Point parking area. There are restrooms here to utilize before you head out on the trail, a playground, and a beautiful view of the edge of the lake. Once you reach the entrance to the trail, take a right and begin your adventure- whether by foot or two wheels!
Cascades + Foot Bridge
Reach this clearing where you’ll find a series of small cascades and a bench for quiet reflection. When you’re ready to continue walk across the short foot bridge.
Scenic View
While the trail offers multiple options to stop and catch a view of the water, this specific point offers a panoramic scenic view of a quiet cove- perfect for a moment of quiet reflection or the perfect selfie!
Linville Road Parking area
You’re now about halfway through the trail and it’s a great time to stop off here at the Linville Road Parking area for a quick break and to use the restroom if needed. You’ll walk briefly along the road before dipping back into the forest to explore the north side of the lake for a few more miles. This parking area is another option for starting your trail journey, as well!
New Greensboro Road Intersection
At this fork in the trail, stay to the left to head toward the Marina and complete the loop. Turning right will take you to the New Greensboro Road parking area, the newest parking area and other option for beginning the trail.
Bridge + Scenic View
Just after the intersection with the New Greensboro Road access point, you will find one of the most photo-worthy spots on the lake- a beautiful bridge over the water with 360-degree views, marking the perfect spot for a photo now that your trail journey is almost complete!
Dam Spillway
Take a quick side trip to see the dam spillway. Note: observe the signage and do not enter the restricted area around the dam.
Salem Creek Greenway Connection
This site marks the trail junction with Salem Creek Greenway. Veer left and cross over the bridge to stay on Salem Lake Trail and complete your loop. If you stay straight, you’ll be on the Salem Creek Greenway headed back toward downtown Winston Salem.
Marina + Main Parking Lot
At this point, you'll come to a gate at the back of the Marina parking area. Walk through the gate and stop in at the Marina & Bait Shop for snacks, souvenirs, or a quick pause to see the scenic views of the fishing pier and lake.
Loop Complete!
Congratulations! You've completed the full Salem Lake Trail loop and have returned to The Point parking lot where you started. Take a moment to pat yourself on the back and look back at the pictures you took along the way.
