Film Details:

GENX is a 9-year investigation about the poisoning of the Cape Fear River and its ties to a global pollution coverup.

Since the 1980s companies have dumped toxic forever chemicals into the Cape Fear River, but locals only learned the truth after 40 years of exposure. This was due to a key collaboration between NC state researchers, local journalists, and passionate advocates. The expose on PFAS actually began in West Virginia, revealed by a small-town farmer and lawyer, who helped uncover internal corporate documents showing how far back, widespread, and dangerous these chemicals can be. Their efforts to confront and stop this are thwarted by a cycle, with substitution chemicals like GenX, allowing polluters to continue business as usual despite evidence of danger. The film further shows how each community impacted by PFAS is intimately linked and offers a model for how we can break the cycle forever.
