Less than a 10-minute drive from downtown, you’ll feel like you are a world away at this 365-acre lake.
Salem Lake has been called the “hidden diamond” in Winston Salem. The highlight of Salem Lake Park may just be the 7-mile, multi-use trail loop trail that circles the lake and takes you through some of the 1,400 acres of forest.
The trail offers scenic views around seemingly every bend and is perfect for walkers, hikers, bicyclists, birders and photographers alike. Wildlife enthusiasts will love seeing the many species of birds and the multitude of turtles sunning themselves on driftwood.
With a working marina and pier, opportunities also abound for boating, kayaking, canoeing and fishing (from the designated fishing pier). It’s also a great place for a picnic, with picnic shelters and a playground.
History of Salem Lake
Salem Lake was created in 1911 when a dam was built on Salem Creek. A third dam was built in 1931 and is still in operation today. The dam holds back 1 billion gallons of water that serve as 30 percent of the city of Winston-Salem’s drinking water.
More recent updates to the park include the completion of a new dam in 2012 and the renovation of multiple park amenities in 2018, including the new and improved marina and event center, updated playground, additional trailheads, and general trail maintenance.
