Strollway Trail Guide

In the heart of downtown Winston-Salem, the Strollway begins off Fourth Street at Merschel Park, providing great city views. Walk toward Kaleideum, the colorful building that houses a STEAM-inspired children's museum.

As you reach First Street, step into Corpening Plaza, a wide-open public square that features a large water feature and grassy areas perfect for a picnic. Seasonally, this space is used for outdoor concerts and events. Before heading across the street, look for the Consolidation of Winston and Salem historic marker, telling the story of how two communities became one.

Cross the ‘living’ bridge over US Highway 421. The bridge features plants and trees and offers panoramic city views. As you reach the other side of the bridge, you’ll see an access point for the Twin City Trail on your right.

Soon after crossing the bridge, you'll come around a corner where the new MUSE Winston-Salem Museum is located. Stop for a moment to appreciate the views of the city behind you before moving on!

Pass under a brick arched area and cross Brookstown Road to continue on the Strollway. There is a wooden sign here where locals post flyers about community news and events. From here, the path will run parallel with Old Salem Rd. This is one of the more scenic stretches of the walk, complete with mature, shady trees and creek crossings.

Once you cross Academy Street, look to your left and you’ll see the Old Salem Historic District including the Old Salem Museum and Gardens and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA). You can explore the historic district on foot for a self guided tour, but for the full guided experience keep walking until you reach the visitor center.

Stop in at the Old Salem Visitor Center to buy tickets, pick up a souvenir at the gift shop and brush up on local history. Also, don’t miss the covered bridge linking the Visitor Center to the main historic district! You'll definitely want to stop for a selfie.

If you keep walking, you'll eventually approach a traffic circle where Old Salem Road and Salem Avenue meet. This is the home to Cobblestone Farmer’s Market, which runs every Saturday. Cross Salem Avenue and turn right on the sidewalk toward Marshall Street SW to keep going.

On your left will be an entrance to paved path between two brick pillars. Take this path.

The Strollway ends at the Molly Leight’s Crossing, an architecturally stunning wooden arch bridge. From here, you can extend your journey by connecting into the Salem Creek Greenway, a 5.2 mile trail that connects into the larger greenway system for access to The Quarry at Grant Park and Salem Lake.
