January 2025 Can't-Miss Events

Our January Events Guide has the details on more than two dozen of the month's biggest events.


January in Winston-Salem may be chilly outside, but the city is heating up with an exciting lineup of events. Catch a thrilling Wake Forest basketball game, cheer on the Carolina Thunderbirds hockey team, or enjoy a captivating music performance at a local venue. January is also the perfect time to try something new, whether that’s an art class, beer school, ice skating, or yoga.  With so much to see and do, there's no excuse to stay indoors this January. Jan. 3-4
Frosty Fifty Trail Races.
8 a.m. Sponsored by the Twin City Track Club, this annual racing event at Salem Lake was named the 2025 South Region Ultra Championship by Road Runners Club of America. Distance races will be on Saturday, Jan. 4, and feature a 50K, 25K, 12.5K, and 50K relay. The 5K will be held on Friday night, Jan. 3. All races will be at Salem Lake. Jan. 4 
"Om" with the WS Symphony: A Musical Yoga Experience:.
11 a.m. New year, new you! Join along on stage as musicians from the Winston-Salem Symphony and instructor Ashley Robinson of 2B Yoga team up for this special fitness class at Reynolds Auditorium (301 N. Hawthorne Road). Tickets are $40 and available on the symphony website.

Jan. 7
Foothills Beer School.
6–8 p.m. Foothills holds a two-hour Beer School on the first Tuesday of every month at its downtown brewpub (638 W. Fourth Street). Spend an afternoon learning the subtle nuances of craft brewing, take a tour of the brewery, and, for the final exam, enjoy plenty of beer samples. The cost is $20 per person; no RSVP is required. Beer School sessions can also be booked for private and larger groups. 

Jan. 10-12, 17-19
W-S Theatre Alliance presents "BEEHIVE."
Presented by the Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance, BEEHIVE celebrates the powerful female voices of the 1960s with such timeless hits as “My Boyfriend’s Back,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” and “Me and Bobby McGee.” All shows are at the Theatre Alliance stage (650 W. Sixth Street). Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $21 for adults and $19 for students/seniors.

Jan. 11-12
WS Symphony concert: "Beyond the Blue Ridge."
 Embark on a musical journey that bridges the gap between classical and bluegrass during this special concert by the Winston-Salem Symphony. Experience the thrill of Bernstein's "The Magnificent Seven," Copland's iconic ballet score "Billy the Kid," and more. The symphony will be joined by guest violinists Mark and Maggie O'Connor. Shows will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday at Reynolds Auditorium.

Jan. 11-12
C&E Gun Show
. Sat, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sun, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. C&E Gun Shows Inc. is dedicated to producing the country's most professional, safest, and ethical gun shows. Visitors will find a large selection of guns, ammo, knives, and more. Tickets are $12 (free for kids aged 12 and under). You can purchase tickets at the door or on the C&E website.

Jan. 11, 18, 25
Cobblestone Winter Farmers Market.
9 a.m.-noon. The Cobblestone Winter Farmers Market will be held downtown each Saturday morning beginning Jan. 11 at 1007 Marshall Street SW. Shoppers can choose from various local produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, and much more. For a look at participating vendors and weekly happenings, visit the market’s Facebook page.

Jan. 13
YOGA(mmunity) at Foothills Tap Room
. 11 a.m. These hourlong, all-levels yoga classes let you relax, rejuvenate, refresh and then drink some beer, wine, or soda. YOGA(mmunity) is monthly at Foothills Tasting Room (3800 Kimwell Drive). The cost is $12 and includes a pint of beer or beverage of your choice after the class. 

Jan. 17-19
Little Theatre of W-S presents "What They Have."
This funny, poignant production from the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem focuses on the healing power of human connection, told through the lives of two very different Hollywood couples. All shows will be at Hanesbrands Theatre (209 N. Spruce Street). Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets start at $19 and are available online here.

Jan. 20 
MLK Day concert featuring Tonality vocal ensemble.
7:30 p.m. Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Tonality will star in this inspiring MLK Day production titled "America Will Be", a renewed vision for an inclusive America. The concert will be presented jointly by Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State universities and held at Wait Chapel on the WFU campus (1834 Wake Forest Road).

Jan. 26
UNCSA presents “Happy Birthday, Mozart!”
3 p.m. Presented annually by UNCSA, this popular concert features UNCSA faculty artists performing Mozart’s chamber music in honor of his birthday. Guests are invited to a special birthday reception after the concert. The concert will be in Watson Hall on the UNCSA campus (1533 S. Main Street). Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 students. 

Jan. 29 
The Wild World of Witchcraft LIVE with Grady Hendrix
. 6:30 p.m. Join New York Times bestselling author Grady Hendrix as he celebrates the release of his latest book, "Witchcraft for Wayward Girls." The event will be at Hanesbrands Theatre (251 N. Spruce Street) and features an hour-long author talk followed by a book signing. Tickets are $35 and include a hardcover copy of the book. 

Throughout the Month (various dates) 

Ice Skating at the Fairgrounds. With winter comes the return of ice skating at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Arena. Public skating times are offered throughout the month, varying daily. Admission is $10; skate rentals are $3. Special events this month include “No School Skate Days” (Jan. 1-3, 20). You can see all public skate dates and get more on the Fairgrounds website here.

Carolina Thunderbirds Hockey (Fridays and Saturdays). The Carolina Thunderbirds, Winston-Salem's hometown hockey team, will play five home games this month on Fridays and Saturdays at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Arena. Games will be on Jan. 4-5, 17, and 24-25.  Start times vary by game. For more details or to purchase tickets, visit the Thunderbirds website.

Concerts at the Ramkat. Downtown’s biggest music venue will feature a number of regional and national headliners this month, both in the main club and the adjacent Gas Hill Drinking Room. Highlights include Beggars Banquet (a Rolling Stone tribute) on Jan 11, Somewhat Petty (a Tom Petty tribute) on Jan. 18, and Lonesome River Band (Jan. 31). Taste of Art at Sawtooth. These popular one-night classes let guests spend a few hours creating a work-of-art to take home in various mediums, including glass, ceramics, jewelry, fibers, and more. Taught by local artists, classes are usually scheduled for Friday evenings or Saturday mornings at Sawtooth School (251 N. Wake Forest basketball. The Demon Deacons will play several exciting games at Joel Coliseum this month, including matchups against ACC rivals NC State (Jan. 4), Stanford (Jan. 15), and UNC (Jan. 21). For tickets, go to the WFU ticketing website here.

WSSU basketball. The Rams continue their 2024–25 season with several home games this month at the always raucous C.E. Gaines Center. Matchups include Bluefield State (Jan. 11.), Lincoln (Jan. 13), and Claflin (Jan. 18), followed by CIAA rivals Fayetteville State (Jan. 20), and Virginia Union (Jan. 27).
