“Before I Go” offers a compelling narrative framework for the work of quilt and clay artist Kimberley Pierce Cartwright. Rather than centering on what remains unfinished, this body of work shifts the lens toward what is intentionally preserved, what endures beyond the artist’s hand.
Through themes of thought, execution, memory, and closure, Cartwright invites viewers into an intimate dialogue between process and presence. Each piece becomes both artifact and echo, documenting not just the act of making, but the energy that lingers in its wake. The work holds space for the quiet in-between moments, the pause after completion, the breath before departure.
This exhibition transforms the subtle residue of the studio into an immersive environment. What might otherwise go unnoticed—gesture, material remnants, layered decisions—becomes activated, allowing the viewer to step into the artist’s internal landscape. Here, making is not only seen, but felt.
“Before I Go” is both offering and invocation. It asks: What do we choose to leave behind? What carries forward? In this space, Cartwright’s work becomes a vessel for reflection, inviting each viewer to consider their own imprint—what is held, what is released, and what remains.

Hand Stitching Quilting Workshop
In conjunction with the solo quilt show "Before I Go", fiber artist and quilter Kimberley Pierce Cartwright will teach a hand stitching class at the Diggs Gallery August 21 from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM. In this workshop participants, age 16+ will use needle and thread to create a scrappy mini quilt. You will learn how to use your fabric stash to put together a complete art project in a few hours start to finish. We’ll brainstorm designs to create together, make our own patterns and hand-sew art quilt projects. We’ll talk about composition and color, and each participant will design an 8 x 10 art quilt that can be framed.
This is a 2.5-hour class. No experience is necessary. Please bring scrap fabric and sharp scissors. Some fabric will be provided. Needles and thread will be provided. Kimberley’s work has been featured in Quiltfolk and Quilting Arts international magazines.
